After School Club - half yearly update.
As we arrive at the half way mark of the year, I thought it would be good practice to update on the current events and news from the After School Club.
Numbers at the club have steady grown since September. We are presently able to take daily up to 24 children until 18.00. Both schools are represented in the figures with ESC now holding approximately 25% of places booked. ESC children grow each term as more and more parents become aware of the service we are able to provide. To support this demand, we are working with the over 8’s to provide a private space for them. It’s no fun when a 4 year old keeps messing up your games! The children have helped to choose and put together the new furniture and sofa which will all be located in the entrance area of the club. To make the den their own, they have asked to get an area for homework (their request!), music, games and books just for their own age. They will also have more freedom around the access they have to their snacks, as they will also have their own fridge.
Following our Ofsted visit in January, we can now confirm we are Ofsted registered. This is great news as its means we are now able to accept childcare vouchers and open our doors to later pick-ups, all of which is very positive for working mums and dads!
Children have a snack on arrival at the club and we aim to keep this healthy but also balanced. We do not exclude snacks such as “pain au chocolat” but keep them for the treat day, which is once a week. To highlight this we have created a weekly menu board in our croc café which parents are able to consult at any time.
Parents have been very keen that we look at trying to provide some kind of holiday club in the periods that fall outside of the normal Oxfordshire school holidays. To help support this, we have opened bookings for a holiday club during the first week of the Easter holidays. Interest is strong with about 40% of places being reserved by ESC children.
French and German speaking activities
The after school club is about play. Den making, cooking, crafts, and gardening are all types of activities that we get up to and we are keen to ensure that children are consulted when we decide what we provide. However, it does seem logical that we facilitate some of these play activities in either German or French. To help develop this, we have taken on this week a German speaking play assistant.
I hope this information is useful and please do not hesitate if you wish to speak to me directly at any time.
