From the desk of Astrid Nielsen-Schuurmans:

It's the end of another academic year and I'd like to update you all on the latest developments and give you some dates for your diary!

  • The transformation process from the current Type I school to an Academy offering Type III European curriculum has entered the next stage. Over the past year a lot of goodwill has been created with all stakeholders: the UK Department for Schools, Children and Families, the Board of Governors of the European Schools, the European Commission, British Ministers and politicians from all parties. Now the financial implications of the plans are being investigated by Paul Doherty, a government appointed consultant, who will report to the UK Department in September with costings and recommendations. Karin van Vrede and I have spoken to Paul Doherty and explained our vision, our priorities, and our worries for our school. Paul is getting to grips with the all these issues and has creative ideas on how to resolve them. We will await the report in September, which needs to be finished before the next Board of Government meeting in October.
  • After securing the recommendation from the Admin Board for Primary 5 to be able to continue to Secondary 1 as normal during the phasing-out period of 2010-2017 (and awaiting the final decision by the Board of Governors in October), we are now tackling the issue of organising an intake into Nursery 1 in 2010 (in case the Academy doesn't start until 2011). That is our next priority and even though there are no guarantees yet, we are confident we will find a solution. Again, all the signs are positive. Watch this space.
  • Thank you so much for your support of the Summer Fête. We have made a profit of about £4500, which we will put to good use for the school and our kids next year.
  • Please order your 30th Anniversary T-shirts before you go on holiday! Antonella Shorrock needs your orders urgently. Go to our website www.cespa.org.uk and follow the instructions. The school and CESPA will not have any T-shirts for the children on the 19th of September, so please order them now. The aim is for all children to wear this T-shirt on this very special day.
  • You'll find all kinds of interesting things on www.cespa.org.uk – it's worth a visit!
  • A fond farewell to all the families that will be leaving us this summer. It was fun to have you with us! All the very best for the future!

Dates for your diary:

2 September: back to school, CESPA welcome coffee in the Drama Studio

16 September 8 pm: Explanation of school transformation plans to (new) parents

      19 September: 30th Anniversary celebrations

24 September 7.30 pm: Secondary parents' evening & class rep elections

2 October 7 pm: CESPA AGM, immediately followed by an update presentation by Ms Pauline Charles from the UK Department for Schools, Children and Families on the transformation process of the school.
